Hypothetically, could something travel faster than the speed of light if it’s traveling in a different medium?

My Optics lecturer said something about how since light travels in a vacuum, you could, potentially, have something travel faster in a different medium, one other than a vacuum.

True or false?

Apparently, we can travel faster than the speed of light they say. Its like the universe expanding faster than the speed of light. The analogy I heard is ants on the surface of a balloon, they don’t move but the baloon expands and they become farther apart (traveling at the balloon expansion speed which represents the universe expanding). I am not sure if I understand all this. Has someone got a scientific explanation in simple words for a non-scientist? Thanks.

dmeiske1@att.net asked:

I want to travel the Universe with my wife and leave Earth behind. Without spending billions of dollars like NASA does on a spaceship to leave Earth and not going very far, is there any way that I can build one and travel faster than the speed of light without damaging our bodies? I know this may be complex but how would I go about doing it? Only serious answers please if you honestly know.
